El Globo is located in the “Cuchilla Jardín-Támesis” Integrated Management District (DMI). Here ecosystem preservation, forest enhancement and restoration activities are implemented to generate positive and permanent impacts on biodiversity. The project has a 30-year financial, technical and legal structure for operation, securing biodiversity gains in time. The area has one of the few remnants of Native High Andean Forest still preserved in the region and it is a registered Habitat Bank at the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia. Its strategic location fosters ecosystem services such as water regulation, carbon sequestration, and nutrient cycling. The project area hosts precious fragments of Cloud forest that serve as essential habitats, facilitating biological processes crucial for numerous species’ survival. El Globo provides habitat for endangered and vulnerable species, including the Yellow-eared Parrot (Ognorhynchus icterotis), the Crested Eagle (Spizaetus isidori), and the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus). These species face habitat loss and fragmentation, and the project area plays a crucial role in their conservation. The project area had experienced extensive logging in the 1980s for cattle grazing. However, due to armed conflict in the region, landowners were forced to abandon the property in the 1990s, leaving it untouched for nearly two decades. El Globo complements international efforts such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the 2022 COP15, all of which focus on biodiversity conservation and financing. Additionally, it falls within a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) and a regional protected area, recognized for its rich birdlife and water resources. In 2020, El Globo was designated as a Private Natural Reserve. El Globo is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including over 120 bird species, 21 mammal species, and 154 plant species. The project’s core mission is to conserve and restore the Cloud Forest, its unique species, and their ecological interactions.
